Theory
ElementsIn Chinese Traditional Medicine, Tao is broken into Yin and Yang, to understand the direction of energy. After this, to give direction an extra dimension, the 5 elements have been brought into the realm.
This chapter explains the 5 elements and how they relate to different areas in reality: the mind, the body, Martial Arts, movement, the world outside and much more. The elements involved are not elements that ARE, they are elements that REPRESENT. Elements in Qi Gong (and therefore TCM) are used to represent aspects in life. They are not meant to represent the actual elements in nature. This would be useless, as these elements got their name and don't need further introduction.
Why these elements? These 5 elements exist everywhere on Earth (whether they all exist throughout the rest of reality, is unknown). From within the Earth, Fire is always there. Fire needs 'fuel' and the first element we knew as humans to be fuel for fire was Wood. Wood lives, but can only do so if it receives air (not an element) and Water. The before last connection to the fifth element is a very tricky one. Water would come from the sky or air, from the plants or from a river or sea. However, in this case Water would already be present in its form and not grow from it. If certain metals (Iron) corrode however, it 'creates' Water. How this was already known centuries ago, I mean seriously thousands of years before 'western' science came to notice this, I can only guess. Yet, this is the example I will hold, as it makes the circle of the elements understandable. Finally, pressure and atomic binding within the earths core and shell will create Metals. Metal -> Water -> Wood -> Fire -> Earth Images will be added soon. |
